The long version: In the BitTorrent specification, all file content inside a torrent is serialized and then cut into pieces, data is transferred and verified in pieces. A torrent file contains a list of hashes of each file piece. When you use a torrent client to verify a file within a torrent, it is verifying the content based on file pieces.
